Making A House A Home
Well today we woke up a little early today, I guess we are still a bit jet legged but it gives us an opportunity to get the day started... At least that was the idea but this morning I was feeling pretty poorly. My stomach was upset this morning so I decided to take a bath and James made me a cuppa to make me feel better. I finally felt better in the afternoon so I decided to finally finish organizing my studio for school which got me thinking of how I have decorated the house.
This was my boyfriends house before I moved in and while we like a lot of the same things and we have the same interests, when it comes to decorating there was no decoration besides Funko Pop Figures everywhere. I came in with my stuff shipped all the way from Canada and brought with me pictures and a good idea of how we should decorate and combine our styles. The gallery wall was a good start and keeps growing. To start with the day I printed some photos, framed them and added them to the gallery wall that goes up in our hallway up the stairs. I got a lot of ideas off Pinterest and the stairway was so plain that I needed to do something with that wall. I like to get inspiration from modern art, sayings that mean something to me and pictures of people who I love. The wall is always growing depending on what we have collected and what we have done throughout the year. It is a reminder of everything we have accomplished throughout the year and what we can look back on and is a constant reminder of the good times we've had.
I have also put candles everywhere which is the most Hygge element there is, my Mexican skulls gifted to me by my sister and my sisters girlfriend and a few pieces of art I brought with me from my former home. When combining a household it is important to mesh the styles together rather than have one or the other. For example I have a large black and white photograph of a tree in Central Park in New York that I absolutely adore and James has a framed poster of the movie Joker so what we did is put them side by side in our downstairs reception room and I think it looks great. As with any house though it is a work in progress and we will add more as we see fit.
My crafting room/studio is the only room that is truly for my use only. It is at the top of our stairs on the landing and is a very cozy nook with a skylight and all the space I need without feeling too cramped or too large. I have a white desk, a pin board, my robot art piece and my Beauty and the Beast poster from when I was a little girl. It helps me focus on work but also makes me smile on how cozy it is. I light a candle and can work on my art or my blog (as I'm writing this blog post from my studio now) and stay focused all the while having that feeling of Hygge.
Tomorrow I start decorating for the autumn so look out on my Instagram (@canadian_hygge) and my TikTok (@carpeltunnel0) to see how we decorate the house for my favourite cozy season!
Happy Hygge!
