Hygge Essentials

Autumn is here and with that comes rainy days, cozy nights and lots of candles. Here are my Hygge essentials for any time but especially in the autumn when the cozy season begins. The most Hygge day for me starts when I get home, especially on a rainy day, I dry off and light all the candles I have in my living room especially the autumn scents from Yankee Candle, Ikea or Bath and Body Works. Next I make a cup of tea and grab whatever book I am reading at the time, currently it is Pet Sematary by Stephen King and My Hygge Home by Meik Wiking, then I light some candles, put the fireplace on and cuddle up with a blanket on the couch.

Today is a Monday and of course we have The Macron Show tonight (10pm UK time every Monday!) but other than that we didn't have much to do today since we did all our boring adult stuff over the weekend. I wanted to decorate the studio for Hallowe'en so it looks good on camera as well as light a candle in here which smells so good as I am writing this. Even when we have work commitments there is always something small you can do that can put the cozy and comfort into any space.

For dinner we had leftover bacon, cheddar & potato soup with homemade garlic bread and prawns. Cooking is so Hygge for me and I love to have friends over for dinner. A dinner party for me is a lot of work but so worth it, sitting down to a delicious home cooked meal with good wine and great friends having conversation is the best Hygge feeling. The grateful feeling I get when everyone is sharing a meal and what great friends I have makes the feeling of Hygge greater. It is not just the physical elements that make up the atmosphere of Hygge. A big part of it is being present in the moment and with what you are doing and who you are with. Simple and light conversation with lots of laughs what should happen, leave the heavy topics at the door.

Candles are essential to any Hygge feeling. They are such a simple and inexpensive way to get that cozy feeling. If you have a fireplace I recommend using it as often as possible. In our house we have a little electric fireplace that can just turn on and off but I love it and gives such a beautiful atmosphere with minimal effort. Get some warm blankets, a cup of your favourite hot beverage and some sweets to enjoy your evening. My boyfriend and I are big horror movie fans. We usually watch a few every night new ones and the classics. Halloween, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Texas Chainsaw Massacre and all the new ones that come out. I make sure all the above Hygge elements are in place before we put on the movie so we can relax and enjoy our evening.

Lastly to have the essential Hygge experience is what you wear. I like to dress up and I do make an effort with my outfit, hair and makeup when I have to go out but when I'm at home I am all about the comfortable clothes. I am one of those people who is always cold so I have many Roots cabin socks or any wool socks will do. Some sweatpants or tights with a loose fitting cozy sweater is my uniform when relaxing at home.

I hope this blog post will help with your cozy Hygge evenings and let me know what else you do for having a Hygge night at home.

Happy Hygge!
